Summer Reading Book Clubs
Did you know that there is a National Summer Learning Association? I had no clue. Apparently, summer learning loss is a real problem in America. According to their website, "All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer," and "most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months." There's a free and easy way to make sure that doesn't happen. Most local libraries offer summer reading programs. I signed LionHeart up for the summer reading challenge and he attended his first book at the library. I think book clubs for young children are a fabulous idea. This is the kind of habit you want them to start young. LionHeart was so proud that he was "reading" The Invention of Hugo Cabret, a chapter book. Though he is still very much an emergent reader (we read it together), the unique format of this book (400 illustrations and 100 words of text) made it very inviting for him. He was able to "read" the illustrations and follow the plot. In addition to discussion questions during the book club, there was an activity and they even made a movie based on a scene from the book. At the end, pizza was delivered. Sold! LionHeart is already asking about the next book club meeting. That was the whole idea - to get him excited about reading.
After book club LionHeart spent some time discussing graphic novels with his new friend.
